Software
SkypeTV
Native Apple TV Skype Plugin
Version 0.1 (1.1) - Download
SkypeTV is an Apple TV front end for the Mac version of the Skype Application. It uses Skype’s powerful and well documented API to obtain information, set preferences, make calls, ect.

The current version is really outdated and will only run on an Apple TV 1G with the 1.1 firmware. This remains here for historical reasons. I am currently working on a firmware compatibility update that will also include video support via usb webcam.

Since this is for the Apple TV 1 which ran Mac OS, could this be adapted to run as a Skype Chat plugin for iChat?

Hey David, I actually started a rewrite of this project a while back and extracted a lot of the API interaction code into a separate framework/class. The goal was to upgrade the plugin for the latest version of the Apple TV 1G and add video call support. The plan was to release the new version as well as the API frameworks. You could definitely use the framework to code an iChat plugin but the framework uses the API-layer so you would still need the Skype app running. I'll take a fresh look at the code sometime next week and see if its at a releasable stage. Cheers.

Hi, I found a video showing your plugin running on a mac under osx-leopard: GREAT. Unfortunately, I cannot get it to work. I have EYETV as well as XBMC running in front row, both installed manually. My MacMini/86 runs without keyboard so this would be really nice ... Help ? THX Paul

Hey Paul, What version of OS X are you trying to run the plugin on? I've only ever tested it on Leopard and haven't looked at it since. You can download the old Leopard installer here: http://brandon-holland.com/downloads/skypeplugin/skypeplugin-0.1-leopard-installer.zip.

Hi Brandon, thank you ! Sorry, found your message only yesterday, got to test this morning: (1) I have Leopard (10.5.8) on my Mac Mini (System under Test), as well as Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on my iMac. (2) Installed on Leopard / Mac Mini: works ! (3) Started FrontRow -> Skype: "Connecting ..." (spinning wheel) (4) Terminated Front Row, found Skye open with Pop-Up: "Do you want to allow app access to Skype?" -> always (5) Quit Skype, started Front Row, -> Skype (6) Front Row quits & disappears, Skype is running (7) Did not quite Skype, same behaviour (8) This behaviour is reproducible: Sorry, bad tidings ;-) (9) Additional info: I was recently forced to upgrade Skype, (would otherwise not connect, even when I clicked away update request), which now stands at 5.8.0.1027 (A) Installed on Snow Leopard / iMac: works ! (B) Started FrontRow -> Skype: "Connecting ..." (no spin.wheel) (C) Terminated Front Row, found Skye open with Pop-Up: "Do you want to allow app access to Skype?" -> always (D1)Quit Skype, started Front Row, -> Skype -> Same behavior as (B), Skype always asks for permission (D2)Did not quite Skype, started Front Row, -> Skype (E) Front Row quits & disappears, Skype is running (F) Again, this behaviour (both) is reproducible. (G) Again, Skype 5.8.0.1027 Sorry for bothering you, I enjoyed testing ;-) THX again, Servus/Regards Paul

Hey California. It would have to be a USB webcam so that it can interface with the Skype app. I haven't had much time to finish work on the new version. Hopefully soon.

Wow I didn't realize there was people still interested in atv 1g. Most of the attention has gone towards 2g and 3g. I had a huge part of it done then I lost interest because it seemed most everyone else lost interest. I had video support working and everything. I'll try and find time to finish it up.

Hello! I'm also interested in this plug-in, I'd love to use Skype on my Apple TV (1G) but I'm running the latest firmware. You've said that you already managed to get video chat working, right? So, if you manage to publish at least a Beta version that works under the latest firmware, I'm sure we'll all be really thankful.

If you are resource/time constrained, why not drop the source with intermediates into github or sourceforge?

Hi, Ive been struggling with LG and Samsung smart tv's with 2015 software which now don't support Skype. Do you have a solution for this or how would I be able to use Skype with Apple TV 3rd generation?
